National Surveillance Unit
Dr Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences, All India Institute for Medical Sciences, New Delhi

AIIMS was set up by a special Act of Parliament in 1956 as an institution of national importance. It is the premier institution for imparting medical education in the country. Teaching and research are conducted in 50 disciplines. More than 1564 research publications are published from AIIMS every year. 25 clinical departments including 5 super specialty centers constitute AIIMS. In 2001-2002, AIIMS catered to nearly 1.5 million individuals and more than 50,000 were operated. The hospital has a bed strength of nearly 1500 beds.

The Dr Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences was established in 1967 as the first super specialty centre at AIIMS. In 2003, 170,037 new cases were registered and 20961 surgeries performed. The R.P.Centre has the largest residency program with 75 post graduate students in Ophthalmology at any point in time. There are 302 beds available including a 24 bed Community Ward. The hospital offers all specialty services under one roof. The Centre offers training for MBBS, B.Sc (Nursing and Ophthalmic Techniques), MD (Ophthalmology) and Ph.D programs. There are 40 faculty and 33 post MD Senior Residents working at the Centre. A round the clock Casualty and the National Eye bank are functional in the Centre.

Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Rohtak

PGIMS, Rohtak, Haryana is a Government owned Institute which offers courses for M.B.B.S., M.D. / M.S. in Ophthalmology, DOMS/ Diploma in Ophthalmology, DNB in Ophthalmology and Ophthalmic Assistant (PMOA). There are ten Ophthalmologists working in the Eye Department. It provides 60 free eye beds and 24-hour functional emergency unit. Total 54,818 new cases were registered in eye department out of which 2,794 persons were operated for Cataract during April 2003-March 2004. It also has an eye bank.

Goa Medical College, Goa
Goa Medical College, Bambolin, Goa is a Government owned Institute which offers courses for M.B.B.S. and M.D. / M.S. in Ophthalmology. There are seven Ophthalmologists working in the Eye Department. It provides 30 free eye beds and 24-hour functional emergency unit. Total 24,892 new cases were registered in eye department out of which 1,230 persons were operated for Cataract during April 2003-March 2004.

 

 

Jawahar Lal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Pondicherry

JIPMER, Pondicherry is a Government owned Institute which offers courses for M.B.B.S., M.D. / M.S. in Ophthalmology and DOMS/ Diploma in Ophthalmology. There are four Ophthalmologists working in the Eye Department. It provides 39 free eye beds and 24-hour functional emergency unit. Total 10,8666 new cases were registered in eye department out of which 1,326 persons were operated for Cataract during April 2003-March 2004. It also has an eye bank.

 

Christian Medical College, Vellore

Christian Medical College, Vellore, Tamil Nadu is a Charitable Non-Profit body which offers courses for M.B.B.S., M.D. / M.S. in Ophthalmology, DOMS/ Diploma in Ophthalmology and Optometrist. There are eight Ophthalmologists working in the Eye Department. It provides 30 free eye beds, 70 paid eye beds and 24-hour functional emergency unit. Total 30,418 new cases were registered in eye department out of which 2,300 persons were operated for Cataract during April 2003-March 2004.


Government Medical College, Nagpur
Government Medical College, Nagpur, Maharashtra is a Government owned Institute with teaching schools for M.B.B.S., M.D. / M.S. in Ophthalmology, DOMS/ Diploma in Ophthalmology, DNB in Ophthalmology, Ophthalmic Assistant (PMOA) Optometrist and Ophthalmic Technician. There are eleven Ophthalmologists working in the Eye Department. It provides 90 free eye beds, 6 paid eye beds and 24-hour functional emergency unit. Total 19,509 new cases were registered in eye department out of which 1,615 persons were operated for Cataract during April 2003-March 2004. It also has an eye bank.

B. J. Medical College, Pune
B. J. Medical College, Pune, Maharashtra is a Government owned Institute which offers courses for M.B.B.S., M.D. / M.S. in Ophthalmology, DOMS/ Diploma in Ophthalmology and DNB in Ophthalmology. There are three Ophthalmologists working in the Eye Department. It provides 80 free eye beds and 24-hour functional emergency unit. Total 12,874 new cases were registered in eye department out of which 400 persons were operated for Cataract during April 2003-March 2004. It also has an eye bank.

Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Sevagram
MGIMS, Sevagram, Maharashtra is a Charitable Non-Profit Institute which offers courses for M.B.B.S., M.D. / M.S. in Ophthalmology and DOMS/ Diploma in Ophthalmology. There are six Ophthalmologists working in the Eye Department. It provides 64 free eye beds, 20 paid eye beds and 24-hour functional emergency unit. Total 12,698 new cases were registered in eye department out of which 1924 were persons operated for Cataract during April 2003-March 2004. It also has an eye bank.

Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru Medical College, Raipur, Maharashtra is a Government owned Institute which offers courses for M.B.B.S., M.D. / M.S. in Ophthalmology, DOMS/ Diploma in Ophthalmology and Ophthalmic Assistant (PMOA). There are seven Ophthalmologists working in the Eye Department. It provides 60 free eye beds and 24-hour functional emergency unit. Medical College, Indore, Madhya Pradesh is a Government owned Institute and an Autonomous body under with teaching schools for M.B.B.S., M.D. / M.S. in Ophthalmology and DOMS/ Diploma in Ophthalmology. There are eight Ophthalmologists working in the Eye Department. It provides 72 free eye beds and 24-hour functional emergency unit. Total 9,447 new cases were registered in eye department out of which 603 persons were operated for Cataract during April 2003-March 2004. It also has an eye bank.

Jawahar Lal Nehru Medical College Hospital, Ajmer, Rajasthan is a Government owned Institute which offers courses for M.B.B.S. and M.D. / M.S. in Ophthalmology. There are six Ophthalmologists working in the Eye Department. It provides 30 free eye beds and 24-hour functional emergency unit. Total 60,250 new cases persons were registered in eye department out of which 4,287 were operated for Cataract during April 2003-March 2004. It also has an eye bank.

R.N.T. Medical College, Udaipur, Rajasthan is a Government owned Institute which offers courses for DOMS/ Diploma in Ophthalmology, DNB in Ophthalmology, Ophthalmic Assistant (PMOA) Optometrist and Ophthalmic Technician. There are three Ophthalmologists working in the Eye Department. It provides 50 free eye beds and 24-hour functional emergency unit. Total 19,341 new cases were registered in eye department out of which 732 persons were operated for Cataract during April 2003-March 2004. It also has an eye bank.

SKIMS Medical College Hospital, Srinagar
SKIMS, Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir is an Autonomous body under Government, which offers courses for M.B.B.S. There are five Ophthalmologists working in the Eye Department. It provides 26 free eye beds and 24-hour functional emergency unit. Total 21,837 new cases were registered in eye department out of which 448 persons were operated for Cataract during April 2003-March 2004. It also has an eye bank.

There are five Ophthalmologists working in the Eye Department. It provides 45 free eye beds, 25 paid eye beds with general special ward and 24-hour functional emergency unit. Total 19,205 new cases were registered in eye department out of which 719 persons were operated for Cataract during April 2003-March 2004.

S.C.B. Medical College, Cuttack
S.C.B. Medical College, Cuttack, Orissa is a Government owned Institute which offers courses for M.B.B.S. and M.D. / M.S. in Ophthalmology. There are nine Ophthalmologists working in the Eye Department. It provides 55 free eye beds, 36 paid eye beds and 24-hour functional emergency unit. Total 24,523 new cases were registered in eye department out of which 2,415 persons were operated for Cataract during April 2003-March 2004.

Christian Medical College, Ludhiana, Punjab is a Charitable Non-Profit body which offers courses for M.B.B.S., M.D. / M.S. in Ophthalmology, DOMS/ Diploma in Ophthalmology, DNB in Ophthalmology and Ophthalmic Technician. There are sixteen Ophthalmologists working in the Eye Department. It provides 100 free eye beds, 8 paid eye beds and 24-hour functional emergency unit. Total 1,72,859 new cases were registered in eye department out of which 11,773 persons were operated for Cataract. It also has an eye bank.

Madras Medical College, Chennai

Madras Medical College, Chennai, Tamil Nadu is a Government owned Institute which offers courses for M.B.B.S., M.D. / M.S. in Ophthalmology, DOMS/ Diploma in Ophthalmology and Optometrist. There are thirty-five Ophthalmologists working in the Eye Department. It provides 371 free eye beds, 107 paid eye beds and 24-hour functional emergency unit. Total 98,170 new cases were registered in eye department out of which 8,373 persons were operated for Cataract. It also has an eye bank.

It is located at Guwahati, Assam. It is a Government owned Institute with teaching schools for M.B.B.S., M.D. / M.S. in Ophthalmology, DOMS/ Diploma in Ophthalmology and Ophthalmic Assistant (PMOA). There are twenty-one Ophthalmologists working in the Eye Department. It provides 150 free eye beds, 10 paid eye beds and 24-hour functional emergency unit. Total 19,654 new cases were registered in eye department out of which 2,751 persons were operated for Cataract during April 2003-March 2004. It also has an eye bank.

Jawahar Lal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh is governed by the Aligarh Muslim University and offers courses for M.B.B.S., M.D. / M.S. in Ophthalmology, DOMS/ Diploma in Ophthalmology, Ophthalmic Assistant (PMOA) and Diploma in Orthoptics. There are fourteen Ophthalmologists working in the Eye Department. It provides 40 free eye beds, 80 paid eye beds and 24-hour functional emergency unit. There are sixteen Ophthalmologists working in the Eye Department. It has 75 eye beds and 4 four private rooms for eye patients. Government Medical College, Surat, Gujarat is a Government owned Institute which offers courses for M.B.B.S., M.D. / M.S. in Ophthalmology, DOMS/ Diploma in Ophthalmology and Ophthalmic Assistant (PMOA). There are four Ophthalmologists working in the Eye Department. Total 22,986 new cases were registered in eye department out of which 3,158 persons were operated for Cataract in 2001.

V.S.S. Medical College, Burla

V.S.S. Medical College, Burla, Orissa is a Government owned Institute which offers courses for M.B.B.S. and M.D. / M.S. in Ophthalmology. There are four Ophthalmologists working in the Eye Department. It has 44 eye beds and one private room for eye patients. Total 16,496 new cases were registered in eye department out of which 1,698 persons were operated for Cataract in 2001.

Medical College Kolkata, West Bengal is a Government owned Institute which offers courses for M.B.B.S., M.D. / M.S. in Ophthalmology, DOMS/ Diploma in Ophthalmology, DNB in Ophthalmology and Ophthalmic Assistant (PMOA). There are sixteen Ophthalmologists working in the Eye Department. It has 207 eye beds and 4 private rooms for the eye patients. Total 50,070 new cases were registered in eye department out of which 2,006 persons were operated for Cataract during 2001.
